Residence Life Programming

Early Academic Intervention Program

The Early Academic Intervention Program is a support program for residential students. Area Directors are notified by faculty and by Academic Support Services staff when their students are on academic probation, are not attending class, or are receiving unsatisfactory grades. The Area Directors then conduct one on one meetings with the identified students. The purpose of these support sessions is to direct individual students with academic risk toward appropriate resources and to provide them with assistance in attaining these resources. The goal is that through this individualized support, students will gain confidence to seek out appropriate resources as well as succeed academically on their own.

Residence Life Program Model of Community Building and Engagement

The Residence Life program model focuses on Community Building and Engagement and fuses Ernest Boyer’s Six Principles of Community:

  • Educationally Purposeful: a place where faculty and students share academic goals and strengthen teaching and learning on campus.
  • Open: a place where free speech is protected and civility powerfully affirmed
  • Just: a place where the sacredness of each person is honored and where diversity is aggressively pursued.
  • Disciplined: a place where individuals accept their obligations to the group and where well defined governance procedure guide behavior for the common good.
  • Caring: a place where the well being of each member is sensitively supported and where service to others is encouraged.
  • Celebrative: a place where the heritage of the institution is remembered and where rituals affirming tradition and change are shared.

RAs are best suited and trained to create relationships with their residents. Resident’s education comes from the experiences, reflection, relationships, and community that RAs play a key role in creating. The program model puts emphasis on community building and facilitating new experiences for residents through events planned and coordinated by RA Staff. The three types of events are monthly socials, monthly community and campus events, as well as monthly educational events.

Program Evaluations

Each RA will be required to submit an online evaluation due within 3 days following the event’s conclusion. In addition, receipts should be turned into their community director within 3 days. Those receipts need to include the name of the RA who spent the money, the program name, and the program date.
