Fall 2024 Room Selection Process
First time, first year students are required by the University to live on campus their first academic year. All new, incoming UNC Asheville students (including new transfer students), who successfully submit a housing application by May 31, will participate in room self-selection, which means you are searching for and selecting your own residence hall and room. New Student Room Selection for Fall 2024 will begin June 11. Students will receive an email about specific selection times later this summer, before selection begins. Room selection will close on July 31. Students who complete their application and housing contract after July 31 or those who do not participate in self-selection, will be manually assigned to an available space by Housing and Residence Life beginning August 1. If you are under the age of 18 at the time you completed your housing application and did not have your parent/guardian co-sign your contract, you are ineligible to participate in room selection.
Room Selection
- Room selection will begin on June 11. Prior to the start of room selection, students who have successfully completed their housing application and contract, will receive an email with your room selection time. Your designated selection time is your first and best opportunity to obtain the space you are hoping for. Room selection will be available in the Housing portal during your selection time.
- Once you have selected a room, you will receive an email with your housing assignment and the name of your roommate, if one has already selected into the room. You can view your assignment and roommate information at any time by logging into OnePort, selecting “Housing Portal”, “Profile Information”, and “View My Roommate(s).”
- Once you have selected your room, or the our office manually assigns a room to you, you are bound to the terms and conditions of the Housing Contract. Any cancellation of your contract for an unapproved reason will result in breach of contract and other charges. Learn more about cancellation of your housing assignment.
- Room self-selection will close on July 31. Students who submit a housing application and do not participate in selection of a room will be manually assigned to a space beginning August 1 by Housing and Residence Life. You will be notified of your assignment via email to your UNC Asheville email address. Once an assignment has been made, all charges associated with breach of contract will be enforced. Learn more about breach of contract.
Selecting a Roommate/Suite Mate
If you have created a Roommate Group, one person in the group can make the room selection for everyone who has accepted the invitation to join the group during their room selection time. It is recommended that the person with the earliest selection time be the one to select for the group. Important information regarding Roommate Groups:
- If you invited someone to your group, or you were invited to join a group, please make sure you or your friends have all accepted the invitiation. You can check the status of your group by going to the Housing portal<Profile Information<Update Profile Information. Under “Roommate Groups” you can see who is a member, who has not accepted the invitation, and who has declined the invitation. If an invitation has not been accepted, they are not part of the group.
- A Roommate Group does not guarantee you housing or a specific residence hall or room.
- A Roommate Group does not hold a space for you with others in your Roommate Group. If a room is not selected for you by a member of the group, during their room selection time, any vacancy in the room/suite can be selected by another student. You are responsible to make sure you have a room assignment.
- During room selection, if you are part of a Roommate Group, you will only be able to see suites with enough room to accommodate your entire group. If there are not enough spaces to accommodate the entire group, it is recommended that the group be disbanded and members select their own housing.
- If one person in the Roommate Group selects housing on their own, and does not select for the rest of the group, group members will not be able to select housing and must leave the group in order to participate in room selection and secure housing.
During room selection, you will be able to see student information, including name, age, and the answers to their roommate preference questions of students who are already assigned to a bed space and/or suite to assist you in choosing a roommate. Please keep in mind that other students are going through the room selection process, and can assign themselves to any available space on campus open to them during selection.
Students are responsible for utlizing roommate preference answers of potential roommates/suitemates to choose their own housing. In the event a student is manually assigned by our office, we will use these same answers to match students with roommates.
Room Changes
You will have the opportunity to change your room until 11:59 pm on July 31. Room changes can be done in the Housing portal by selecting the “Change My Room” button. After the July 31 deadline, no room changes will be allowed until the official Room Change Request Period, which is usually 1-2 weeks after the start of the fall semester.
Meal Plan Selection
- All residential students, with the exception of those living in The Woods, are required to have a meal plan.
- Students, outside of Woods residents, will be defaulted to the Unlimited+50 plan later this summer. There will be an option to change plans and more information about the meal plan change process will be emailed to students at a later date.
- You will have the opportunity to change your meal plan until 11:59 pm on the 3rd day of classes.
