Services for Residential Students

The Office of Housing and Student Life Operations

Housing and Student Life Operations strives to provide every residential student with a safe, clean and comfortable living & learning environment. We maximize the enjoyment of living and the excitement of learning here at UNC Asheville through our staff, our facilities, our amenities and our service.

Our desire is that each student as an individual and all students as a community will truly be able to call their residence halls at UNC Asheville a home away from home.

The Office of Residential Education

Residential Education works within the residence hall communities to create a vibrant living & learning experience for our students. Through our multi-tiered programs, we work to help students experience, connect and engage with UNC Asheville and the larger community. Our staff of more than 100 is highly committed to creating and maintaining a living environment that fosters and facilitates personal growth, responsible citizenship and community involvement within the residence halls and beyond. Residential Education works collaboratively with the Housing and Student Life Operations and many other departments both within and outside the Division of Student Affairs to ensure that the residential living experience prepares students to be productive citizens and develop a lifelong commitment to learning and personal wellness.

Maintenance, Housekeeping, or Room Setup Needs

Complete the Residence Hall Maintenance form, and routine requests should be resolved within 24 hours Monday through Friday. Requests received after hours will be responded to on the next business day.

Residence Hall Laundry

Laundry services are provided through a partnership with Caldwell & Gregory. Laundry facilities are located on the first floor of each residence hall, except Ponder Hall which has laundry rooms on the 2nd & 4th floors. Each laundry room has instruction signs on the proper use of the equipment and how to notify Caldwell & Gregory if a machine malfunctions.

Included Laundry

For all residential students, the cost of laundry is included in your room fees. There are no additional charges for washing or drying.

  • Students should have a full load of clothes each time they use the machines for best results.
  • Because the washers are high-efficiency front loading, students should only use H-E detergent.

Wash Alert

Want to know the status of washers and dryers in your residence hall? Check out which machines are available through the Wash Alert monitoring system. You can set it up to email or text you when machine is available or when your washing or drying is complete.  (Wash Alert is not yet available in the Governor’s Village laundry rooms.)

Here is how it works:

Sign on by using the convenient QR code posted in each laundry room to monitor via your phone.  Or you can connect from your PC or laptop by clicking on the laundry room location from the list below.

You will be able to see the availability of machines in your laundry room in real time.

If several machines are in use, you can request a text or an email when a machine becomes available.

Start your machine, then choose your machine on the Wash Alert site and enter your text or email information to be notified when the cycle is complete.

Resident Student Mail

The Student Mail Center is located in Highsmith Student Union between the bookstore and the food court. All residential student mail and packages will be received and picked up at this location.  Student mail boxes and package pick up are available any time that Highsmith Student Union is open.

Individual mailing addresses follow this pattern:
Student Name
UNCA Box # xxxx
2500 University Heights
Asheville, NC 28804

Student Mail Center Mass Mailing Policy

On campus groups including university departments and recognized student groups:

On campus groups including university departments and recognized student groups wishing to have promotional materials, flyers, schedules, etc put in resident student mailboxes in the Student Mail Center need to submit an example of their material to the Associate Director of Highsmith Student Union or their designees for approval. If approved, materials need to be delivered or dropped off to the Student Mail Center one week before they need to go in the mailboxes.

Off campus groups, companies, vendors, and the like:

Off campus groups, companies, vendors, and the like are not permitted to use the Student Mail Center or resident student mailboxes for free advertising, marketing, promotion, and so on. Off campus groups who wish to mail information to resident students should follow United States Postal Service regulations on sending out mass mailings. Directory information of UNC Asheville students is public information available on the UNC Asheville website.  Mail that comes in addressed to specific students or mailboxes is put out the same day received whenever possible. Please note, United States Postal Service mass mailings with a generic addressee are not posted to resident student mailboxes.

Exceptions to the policies above are rare and must be requested in writing to the Associate Director of Highsmith University Union or designee.

Wireless Internet

All residence halls are equipped with wireless connectivity throughout the building, as well as 1 ethernet port for each student in student bedrooms.

In addition to the standard student room furniture of a bed, desk, desk chair, dresser, and closet space all student rooms in the residence halls include a Microfridge® unit.  A MicroFridge® with Safe Plug® technology uses about half the electricity of 2 separate appliances and reduces the risk of circuit overloads, saves electricity, and money.

With the one plug to the wall operation, just one plug goes into the wall socket to operate the refrigerator, freezer and microwave oven. Plus the Dual Outlet Charge Station provides students with a means to re-charge personal electronics without running extension cords.

MicroFridge® offers students a safe and convenient food storage and preparation solution that we know you will find useful.

Community Kitchens

Kitchen facilities are located in each residence hall for students who wish to prepare meals, bake cookies, or try out new recipes. Community kitchens include an oven, cook top, sink, counters and cabinet space. The kitchens in the Ridges also include large refrigerators.  Pots, pans, and other food preparation supplies can be checked out through the Community Director or Resident Assistants in each area.
