UNC Asheville’s first apartment-style housing for upperclass students, will increase the available on-campus living options by almost 300-beds. Designed to foster community, the six buildings will feature four-, five- and six-bed configurations, with laundry rooms on site and full kitchens in each apartment. The sixth building, located closest to University Heights, will have a multipurpose room/visitors center, a fitness room and an apartment for the community director. The names of the individual buildings are namesakes of North Carolina native trees: Aspen Hall, Beech Hall, Cedar Hall, Chestnut Hall, Magnolia Hall, and Willow Hall.

  • The Woods will offer streaming IPTV, with a Roku stick supplied to each unit for optimal streaming experience. Students will be able to access Hulu, Netflix, and other streaming tv with the Roku stick.
  • More project funding was dedicated toward wifi infrastructure, making the wifi coverage at The Woods one of the strongest on campus. In addition to multiple interior/exterior wifi access points, each unit will offer 2 hard-wired internet ports in the apartment living room.
  • With each unit offering a full-size kitchen, with full-size appliances, no meal plans are required; however, students will have the option to purchase a block meal plan, should they so desire. Because each kitchen is equipped with a full-size refrigerator, stove, and microwave, microfridges will not be in the units.

Construction Updates and Communications

Sidewalk closure and University Heights lane closure for pile driving & shoring, beginning Fri Oct 6

Beginning Friday, October 6th, through approximately Friday, October 20th (weather dependent), work will begin at the future Building F site which will necessitate closing the sidewalk and all parking on the south side of University Heights between Brown Hall and the entrance to Mullen Park (the crosswalk to Rhoades/Robinson).  Traffic on University Heights will also be reduced to one lane to accommodate the construction equipment.

Work will take place between 7:00am-7:00pm and will be very noisy.

Highsmith Union Construction Viewing Platform Closure 8/4

The construction viewing platform located in Highsmith 239 (within the former Student Organization Suite) will be accessible until Friday, August 4th.

South Campus forest work, Trail Closure

On Friday, August 4, areas around south campus, most noticeable along WT Weaver and the new connector road, will be under brushed with a forestry mulcher. All trails in this area will be closed during this work.  The understory in this area of campus is primarily exotic invasive plant species.  The forestry mulching machine will effectively turn the overgrown vegetation into a layer of mulch under the forest canopy. This work will make the area more environmentally healthy and safer for campus community members using P29 and the connecting trails to campus.

Highsmith Union 2nd floor Entrance Closure 8/7

On Monday, August 7 construction barriers will be erected at the Highsmith Union breezeway.  During the construction phase, main entrances to Highsmith will be on the first floor facing Mills Hall near room 104 and under the bridge by the Bookstore.
